The annual UIW Cross Country Invitational attracted 10 men’s teams and 10 women’s and the Incarnate Word males won their race while the women finished second only to the University of Texas at Austin.
The Cardinals’ women got a fifth place out of Marie Troufflard in the 3.2K race and that broke a near strangle hold on the top 10 by Texas / Austin. The Longhorns had the top four runners paced by Allison Mendez and her 19:02.5 winning time. Then, after Troufflard, Texas finished runners at six, eight and nine.
Texas posted just 16 points in winning the team title while Incarnate Word was second with 69.
Incarnate Word’s strength, in addition to the fifth place by Troufflard, was in having four others in the top 20. The leader in 12 position was Alyson Gonzales while Alma Santos was 14th. Rose Caldwell came in 18th and Alma Salinas was 20th.
