A US Army band, singing twins, and a halftime swearing in ceremony are the headliners when Incarnate Word plays football against Texas Lutheran on Military Appreciation Day at Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium.
Gametime Saturday is 2 p.m. for the Cardinals and Bulldogs and Incarnate Word will be seeking to move above .500 in this its inaugural football season. UIW comes in at 3-3 for the year.
All branches of the United States military complex will have representatives with their families at the game compliments of the Cardinals.
Before and during the game the US Army 323rd Medical Command Band from Fort Sam Houston, commanded by CWO2 Jeffrey Price and drum major MSGT Eric Basora, will provide music. Prior to the game’s kickoff the National Anthem will be sung by twins SGT First Class Timothy Harris and SGT First Class Thomas Harris of Fort Sam Houston.
The military festivities continue at halftime when LTC David Guarriello, commander of the UIW/St. Mary’s Army ROTC unit, makes a special presentation to Incarnate Word Provost Dr. Denise Doyle.
Then, the Army will conduct a swearing in ceremony on the field for its newest recruits followed by a performance by Central Catholic High School’s JROTC drill team, the Chaminade Guard.
Likely this will be the only football game ever between UIW and Texas Lutheran. These two universities have a long athletic history with one another dating back to the old Heart of Texas Conference. The Bulldogs play out of the American Southwest Conference while the Cardinals are playing independently this year and in 2010 will join the Lone Star Conference which will deliver a set schedule to UIW.
Tickets for the game are available on-line at www.uiwcardinaltickets.com.
