This is homecoming week at Incarnate Word and the slate of activities includes everything from a haunted house visit to a wine and cheese reception with President and Mrs. Louis J. Agnese Jr. to a full slate of Cardinals athletic contests highlighted by the first-ever homecoming football game.
The first games of the weekend in athletics comes on Friday when both Cardinals soccer teams will be in action. First up is the women’s soccer game against St. Edward’s at 6 p.m. at Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium on campus. This is a matchup between the two top Heartland Conference teams with a likely NCAA post-season berth at stake.
Also on Friday the men’s soccer team has an 8:30 p.m. game at Benson Stadium against Texas / Permian Basin. This too is a Heartland affair as UIW seeks to maintain its hold on second position in the conference.
The Incarnate Word volleyball team gets in on the homecoming action Saturday with a noon match against Heartland newcomer Arkansas / Fort Smith. Added incentive for the Cardinals will be senior day ceremonies prior to the match when four players prepare for their final home match of their careers.
Then comes the feature attraction for any homecoming weekend, the football game.
The Cardinals in their inaugural season will be looking for victory number six (5-3) which would guaranteed UIW of a winning record in this the first year of football in the 120-plus-year history of the school. Kickoff is 2 p.m. and the opponent is Southern Arkansas out of the Gulf South Conference.
