University of the Incarnate Word soccer players Lianah Flores and Keri Dawson were named to the 2009 CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Women’s Soccer First Team on Friday.
The honor was given to NCAA Division II and III soccer players from District 6 who not only represented their respective schools on the soccer field, but who also work hard in the classroom.
Flores, a senior midfielder from Harlingen, Texas, has started every game for the Cardinals this season and is currently third on the team in points (14) and goals (6). She is an Athletic Training major; has a 3.95 GPA; and has been named the Heartland Conference Offensive Player of the Week twice this season.
Flores also won an Academic All-District award in 2007.
Dawson, a junior who has started every game for UIW at defense, hails from Las Cruces, New Mexico, and is third on the team in assists (3). She is also an Athletic Training major and has a 3.88 GPA.
Flores and Dawson are both now automatically nominated for a chance to be named to the 2009 CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American teams.
The Cardinals face off against St. Edward's tonight in a game between the No. 1-ranked and No. 2-ranked teams in the South Central Region of NCAA Division II. The winner of tonight's matchup takes over in the driver's seat as both programs vie for the Heartland Conference Championship - and an automatic bid in the the NCAA post-season.
