INCARNATE WORD 5, LAREDO JC 4
Opening the season back in the first week of February Incarnate Word traveled down to Laredo Junior College with high expectations only to get cleaned out but good. Now, in the first week of April the Cardinals turned the tables by nipping LJC 5-4 at the Mabry Center.
Freshman Alex Wieland won his number three singles match getting UIW to within one point of a revenge victory.
Traditionally a powerhouse in the junior college ranks, Laredo put the 9-0 whipping on the Cardinals and took little or no mercy. Friday, Carlos Olvera put on a show at number five singles winning 6-2, 6-2 and UIW had the team victory.
Incarnate Word won two of three doubles matches before Jose Arizpe got the third point with his 6-1, 6-2 win at number two singles. David Wieland quickly followed that with a 6-3, 6-2 win at number three and the Cardinals had four points with four matches still underway.
Laredo won at four and at the top in the number one singles. The Palominos won at number six but the deed had already been done with Olvera’s triumph.
The victory put UIW at 11-5 on the year with two matches upcoming on Saturday. At 9 a.m. Incarnate Word will host McMurry and then turn around at 1 p.m. for a visit by Hardin-Simmons.
