After winning the Heartland Conference regular season title against St. Mary’s last weekend, the Incarnate Word basketball team suffered a letdown on the road against Arkansas-Fort Smith, 84-70, on Thursday night.
The Cardinals had just two players in double figures – seniors Nia Torru with 25 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double and LaShae Woodard with 16 points and 8 rebounds – and trailed from the 10:28 mark in the first half and never recovered, being down by as many as 20 points at one point.
The loss drops UIW to 19-7 overall and ends the team’s 8-game winning streak. However, the Cardinals stay in first place in the Heartland Conference with a 13-1 record, as Fort Smith is still in-transition to NCAA Division II, so conference games have no affect on either team’s conference record.
Incarnate Word ends the 2009-10 regular season this Saturday with a home game against Midwestern State University at 4 p.m. The final home game of the year, it will be Senior Day.
