The NCAA Division II National Championships are underway and Incarnate Word’s men swimmers got a quick start after the first day.
With day one on the books the Cardinals were in second place with 73 teams points, right on the heels of traditional power Drury which compiled 79 points.
Aliaksandr Yatsko got it started for the Cardinals with his second position in the 1,000-freestyle. His time was 9:22.51. Later in the championships Yatsko will swim for his third consecutive national title in the 500-freestyle.
Next up for Incarnate Word was Nikita Belousov in the 200-IM and his 1:49.80 time was a new UIW school record and gave him fourth place.
The second UIW school mark to fall came in the 200-medley relay where the Cardinals’ foursome finished in 1:32.40 for ninth place. That group was James Shake, Blake McKay, Sean Reeves and Luke Bernhard.
The NCAA meets continues through Saturday in Canton, Ohio.
