Three members of the Incarnate Word track and field team broke records over the weekend and two of the new marks had been previously held by those who broke them.
It was the Victor Lopez Classic in Houston hosted by Rice University, staged primarily for NCAA Division I schools. UIW did have a presence at the meet with eight competitors finishing among the top 10 in their events including the three new Cardinals school records.
Sebastien Jaraba-Heffner got it started with his third place finish in the 800-meters with a UIW record time of 1:53.29. He finished ahead of 10th place Chris Flores who previously held the Incarnate Word record of 1:54.77. And, at sixth, Flores ran a 1:55.04 which is now tied for third best at UIW.
Shayn Weidner ran his first 3,000-meter steeple chase of the spring and lowered the UIW time with his 9:29.84. He was third in the race. He broke his own mark of 9:43.18 from April of 2009.
The third new UIW mark came when Zach Zellars topped his own record in the shot put. He threw 50-11.50 for sixth place breaking his previous best of 50-06.00 set just one week earlier.
Other top 10’s for Incarnate Word were 4th in the 1,500 by Howard Gill (3:58.55), 5th in the 10,000 by Marcos Gonzales (34:19.95), 7th in the steeple chase by Adrian Carrillo (9:47.67), and 10th in the long jump by Steven Young (21-08.25).
Also, the Cardinals’ 4x400 relay team finished 9th in 3:18.32. That group was Christian Alicea, Zachary Kurz, Corey McDonnough and George Alicea.
