Senioritis did not seem to affect Incarnate Word’s Pierce Caldwell as for the second straight year he has received an All-American honor.
Division II BULLETIN, arguably the most comprehensive source for NCAA Division II men’s basketball, has now placed Caldwell on its All-American honorable mention list in consecutive years. He is the lone Heartland Conference representative to be honored and is one of only four from the South Central Region.
With one exception, an addition to his glittering list of achievements, Caldwell has repeated all his recognitions from a year ago. He three-peated as Heartland player of the year, and repeated as the league’s tournament MVP. The new honor for him following his senior season was being named to the South Central all-region second team.
In earning his All-American mention, the San Antonio Marshall product was 12th in the nation in free throw percentage (.892), 20th in three-point field goals a game (3.1), and 34th in three-point field goal percentage (.410).
With his four-year Incarnate Word career now concluded Caldwell departs the Cardinals’ program as the all-time leader in three-point field goals (263), and free throw percentage (.873). He set a school mark with 61 consecutive free throws made. Also, he is now the second all-time leading scorer in UIW history with 1,873 points.
