INCARNATE WORD 8-9, NEWMAN 0-1
Incarnate Word rose above the break-even mark for the season but more importantly the Cardinals got off to a good start in the Heartland Conference season with a sweep of Newman.
With the twin victories UIW moved to 12-11 on the year and 2-0 in conference action with the 9-0, 8-1 wins Friday afternoon at Cardinals Field. Both games were shortened by the run rule, game one in five and game two in six. Newman seeing its first action of the year due to inclement weather back home in Kansas is 0-2 and 0-2 in the league.
Freshman righthander Briana Sanchez tossed a one-hitter at the Jets in the opener. She gave up but one hit while striking out eight. She did not walk a batter. Her season mark rose to 9-3.
Lea Padilla gave her all the support needed with a first inning, two-out home run to center field. Incarnate Word made sure in the bottom of the third when Melanie Padilla doubled to left field driving home two. In the game Melanie Padilla was 2-3 with four RBI.
Game two had the Cardinals making sure of the verdict early on. After a single run was produced in the first pinch batter Athea Surface enticed a bases loaded walk. Then with two outs Alex Carraman drilled a home run to left plating three more. Carraman had four RBI total on her 2-2 game at the dish.
Lea Padilla worked the first four innings for the win allowing three hits, the one earned run while walking one and fanning three.
These same two clubs go at it again on Saturday. The single game has a first pitch at noon.
