INCARNATE WORD 0-12, MIDWESTERN STATE 10-3
Midwestern State for one game Thursday played like the number three team in the nation before Incarnate Word gave the Mustangs some of their own medicine in game two in Wichita Falls.
Carrying that lofty ranking Midwestern State rolled up the Cardinals with a five-inning, run-rule 10-1 victory. Then UIW unsacked the big bats and returned the favor with a six-inning, run-rule 12-3 win in the nightcap. Incarnate Word got to 20-17 on the year while MSU went to 32-6.
The Incarnate Word bats produced three home runs, three doubles and a dozen runs batted in to support righthander Briana Sanchez who moved to 16-5 for the season.
It started in the very first inning of game two when Lea Padilla homered to left field for a pair of runs with two outs. The Cardinals removed all doubt in the third when Melanie Padilla doubled to left center driving home three more with two outs.
In the fifth Alex Carraman opened with a long ball, Melanie Padilla singled home another followed by a two-run ball over the fence by Kelley Moritz.
Carraman and Moritz added two-base hits to their production.
In game one the Mustangs got a sterling performance from Katie Petersen who gave up but one lone single in running her season mark to 16-2. The Mustangs batted in but four innings and scored runs in each.
The Cardinals now take a week's break before returning to Heartland Conference action with doubleheaders at St. Mary's on both April 9 and 10.
