Nia Torru crafted one of the more successful basketball seasons by an individual in recent memory and as a result she has been named Incarnate Word’s Female Athlete of the Year for 2009-2010.
Her year began back in November with being one of the first Heartland Conference players of the week, the first of five times for that particular recognition to come her way, and it culminated with an All-American honorable mention designation by Division II BULLETIN.
In between the Houston senior was voted Daktronics All-South Central Region second team and before that she was the Heartland’s player of the year for the second straight season. She was All-Heartland first team for the fourth straight time and she was on the conference’s all-tournament team.

Based on her performance in the classroom, Torru was voted CoSIDA Academic All-District second team—she has maintained a 3.63 grade point average over her four years while studying kinesiology. She will receive her bachelor’s degree in December of 2010.
Statistically on the court, she set a school single game record with eight steals. Nationally she finished 44th in Division II with her .825 free throw percentage and she was 46th nationally with her .389 three-point percentage. In the Heartland she was top 10 in nine different statistical categories including being second in scoring (14.6) and three-point percentage. She was third in three’s made (58) and free throw percentage.
During this past season Torru became the all-time leading scorer in Incarnate Word women’s basketball history. She finished her career with 1,778 points. And she set a school scoring average record at 15.3 over her four years.
This is the 12th year Incarnate Word’s athletic department has named a female athlete of the year. To be eligible for the honor the individual must have been named athlete of the week sometime between the beginning of the competition year in August and the end of the spring seasons.
