After a year away Incarnate Word’s men’s tennis team is headed back to the NCAA Division II South Central Regional Tournament.
The regional affair is always divided into two parts and this time the Cardinals will travel to Abilene May 6 and May 7 in an effort to earn a trip to the national championships set for mid-May in Florida.
Seeded third in the South Central with a mark of 11-2 in the region, UIW will play number six seed Washburn of Kansas at 10 a.m. on May 6. As the number two seed in the region Abilene Christian is the host school and will play the winner of the first match. That will come on May 7 at 10 a.m.
Incarnate Word has played both Abilene Christian and Washburn once already this spring. The Cardinals lost to ACU by a 5-4 count in Abilene before defeating Washburn by the identical score of 5-4 in San Antonio.
The other half of the South Central bracket includes host and number one seed St. Edward’s along with number four Northwest Missouri and number five Cameron.
A year ago Incarnate Word failed to advance to the regional tournament breaking a string of four consecutive seasons in the competition. Now a member of the NCAA Division II for 11 years the Cardinals have been in the regional tournament seven times with one trip to the national tournament in 2002.
