ACADEMIC HONORS TO THREE

Three members of Incarnate Word’s men’s track and field team have been voted first team on a regional academic squad.

Named academic all-district by ESPN/The Magazine were senior Shayn Weidner and junior twin brothers Christian and George Alicea.  This award is based on both their performances in the classroom as well as their successes on the track.  All three now will be on the All-American ballot.

Weidner, UIW’s Student-Athlete of the Year, received his bachelor’s degree in early May after maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.95 in mathematics.  This past spring he set school records in both the 5,000-meter run and in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.  Last fall he was named USTFCCCA Division II All-Academic after the cross country season and after he won the individual champion of the Heartland Conference.

The Alicea brothers in the spring made their mark in relay events.  They both ran on the 4x400 team which set the top two times in UIW history.
