For the first time ever the Lone Star Conference will conduct its annual football media day activities outside the Dallas area and the show is coming to Incarnate Word.
With the intent of introducing Incarnate Word, which became a member of the LSC on July 1, the league will bring coaches and athletes to the UIW campus on Tuesday, July 20. Festivities get underway at 11 a.m. in the UIW Rosenberg Sky Room.
Each of the 14-football playing institutions will have its head football coach and one player present. Also, the schools have the opportunity to make available a coach and an athlete from one other fall sport. Incarnate Word will be represented by football Coach Mike Santiago and sophomore linebacker Dakota Mawyer. The Cardinals volleyball team will have Coach Jennifer Montoya and senior setter Sarah Nordman on hand.
The day’s agenda calls for the release of the Lone Star’s annual football pre-season poll followed by brief comments from each coach.
Pre-season polls also will be unveiled for the other fall sports including men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, and men’s and women’s cross country.
After the formal ceremonies are concluded UIW Athletic Director Mark Papich will give participants a tour of the Cardinals sporting venues.
This is Incarnate Word’s first official event as a member of the LSC. UIW was invited to join the nearly 80-year-old conference back in January of 2010 with the official date coming this past July 1. Previously UIW spent 11 years as a charter member of the Heartland Conference.
The Lone Star conducts championships in 16 sports and UIW will compete in all 16. In joining the LSC Incarnate Word continues as a member of the NCAA Division II.
