Incarnate Word’s men’s swimming team has garnered more honors, this time on the academic side of the student-athlete equation.
For last year the Cardinals as a team posted a cumulative grade point average of 3.07. Because they were above the magic 3.00 mark the squad has been named Academic All-America by the College Swim Coaches Association of America (CSCAA).
Across the NCAA’s Division II, 23 schools qualified for the honor. That mark by the Cardinals was 18th on the list. Colorado School of Mines, a Rocky Mountain Conference foe of the Cardinals, led all schools with a GPA of 3.39.
On the individual side of the honors list announced by the CSCAA, Incarnate Word had five swimmers and divers honored with Academic All-America status. To get on this list individuals must have a 3.30 GPA and must have met “A” cut standards to qualify for the Division II national championship meet.
Diver Collier McKenzie (4.0, business) received the honor along with teammates Mark Rubin (3.96, biology), Sean Reeves (3.94, accounting), Nikita Belousov (3.71, international business), and Aliaksandr Yatsko (3.7, computer information systems).
