The Class of 2010 will include two former superstars at Incarnate Word as the University on Saturday introduces its most recent additions to the UIW Athletic Hall of Fame.
Ceremonies are set for halftime of the year’s opening football game at Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium on campus. The game itself will feature Incarnate Word hosting Langston University with kickoff at 7 p.m. The Cardinals are opening their second year of football competition, this time as members of the Lone Star Conference.
The two honorees are Christie Powell who played soccer at Incarnate Word between 1991 and 1996, and Hector Delgadillo, a pitcher on the baseball team from 2001 to 2004.
On the field Powell was an NAIA All-American as well as being a three-time NAIA All-American Scholar-Athlete. During her time at UIW her teams were a cumulative 58-15-8.
Delgadillo departed UIW holding almost every pitching record in the Cardinals’ book. His marks for career wins, complete games both season and career, innings pitched and strikeouts remain the benchmarks at Incarnate Word. The Cardinals were 137-87 during his years.
The inductions of Powell and Delgadillo on Saturday will bring the membership of the UIW Athletic Hall of Fame to 14. The basic criteria for election include a UIW degree, five years beyond athletic eligibility and representation of the University on the field, court or pool for at least two years.
