Extra Benefits - What Is An "Extra Benefit"?

The NCAA defines an extra benefit as any special arrangement by an institutional employee or a representative of the institution's athletics interest (i.e., a "Representatives of Athletics Interests") to provide a student-athlete (or a student-athletes relative or friend) a benefit that is not generally available to other University of The Incarnate Word students and their relative and/or friends, unless expressly authorized by NCAA legislation. Therefore, please be aware of the following:

  • You cannot accept anything from an employee of Incarnate Word athletics department or a ESU Representative of Athletics Interests (e.g., use of a car, hair cut, clothing, gifts, money, payment of long distance telephone calls, etc.).
  • You cannot accept free or reduced cost room and/or board from an employee of the UIW athletics department or Representatives of Athletics Interests of the UIW's athletics programs. This includes in Kansas, in your home city or any other location.
  • You cannot accept free or reduced-cost merchandise or services from any merchant unless that free or reduced-cost item is also available to the general public.
  • You cannot receive a special discount arrangement or credit on a purchase (e.g., airline ticket, clothing), or service (e.g., laundry, dry cleaning) from an employee of the UIW athletics department or Representative of Athletics Interests.
  • You cannot eat at a restaurant as the guest of Representatives of Athletics Interests or an employee of the UIW athletics department.
  • On infrequent, special occasions (e.g., a birthday, Thanksgiving, etc.) you may accept an invitation to the home of an employee of the UIW athletics department or Representatives of Athletics Interests for a meal.
  • You cannot use a Department of Athletics copy machine, fax machine, or make long distance phone calls using departmental equipment or the long distance access code of an employee of the UIW athletic department or Representative of Athletics Interests.
  • Staff members of the UIW athletics department or Representatives of Athletics Interests are not permitted to type reports, papers, letters, etc., for you.
  • An employee of the UIW athletics department or Representatives of Athletics Interests cannot provide you with a loan of money, a guarantee of a bond, the use of an automobile or the signing or co-signing of a note to arrange a loan.
  • An employee of the UIW athletics department may provide you only reasonable and occasional local (i.e., within 30-mile radius of the UIW campus) transportation. However, an employee of the UIW athletics department may not utilize a University vehicle for purposes of assisting your move from one residence to another.

Gambling Prohibition

In order to keep you up-to-date and informed regarding NCAA and University regulations that pertain to your involvement with any gambling activity and to provide a timely reminder to help you avoid any activities that may jeopardize your eligibility to participate and compete, please review the following rules. It is important for you, your teammates, and the University that you know and abide by all NCAA rules and regulations.

  • You may not knowingly provide information to individuals involved in any type of organized gambling activities concerning intercollegiate athletics competition.
  • You may not solicit a bet on any intercollegiate or professional team.
  • You may not accept a bet on any team representing Incarnate Word or participate in any gambling activity that involves intercollegiate or professional athletics through a bookmaker, a parlay card or any other method employed by organized gambling.
  • Participation in "tournament brackets" on-line or otherwise can be considered gambling. DO NOT participate in NCAA brackets.

Athletic Compliance

The University of the Incarnate Word wants all athletes to work within NCAA Guidelines. The following is a list of potential NCAA violations that you may be involved in or may have witnessed. All information will be kept private, so have confidence that you can provide information of these illegal activities anonymously. Call 210-805-3012 with any information.

Areas of Potential Violations and Definitions

Fraudulent Activities - Activities designed to influence the outcome of sports activities; organized gambling.

Improper Giving or Gifts - Giving, receiving or solicitation of items which could be reasonably interpreted as an effort to influence a recruiting decision; items given, received or solicited for the benefit of an individual or an individual’s family or friends; items given, received or solicited during or in connection with signing negotiations; the acceptance of cash, checks, money orders, vouchers, gift certificates, loans, vehicles or transportation.

Inappropriate Activities - Interaction of consultants with student athletes off or on the field.

Misuse of Assets, Players or Endorsements - Use of college sports equipment, uniforms or any other items owned by the institution for personal activities. Improper talent scout activity; arranging meetings between current or former players with talent scouts; taking money for arranging introductions with scouts.

Recruiting Misconduct - Phone calls or unauthorized visits outside the recruiting period; undue duress or influence from alumni, trustee or unauthorized personnel; recruiting players outside amateur status

Scholarship/Financial Aid Misconduct - Falsifying entrance or placement exams; utilizing an assumed name; improper inducement of benefits or financial aid. Unusual treatment for one player and not for others in loans, transportation or housing benefits; arranging for fraudulent academic credit or falsification of transcripts

Sexual Misconduct - The making of unwanted and offensive sexual advances or of sexually offensive remarks or acts, by associates or superiors

Substance Abuse - Substance abuse is defined as the misuse of both legal and illegal drugs including alcohol. (Examples include: cocaine, narcotics, marijuana, stimulants or steroids)

Reporting of Violations

Compliance to NCAA and Heartland conference rules is the highest priority for UIW Athletics. If you have witnessed or have knowledge of a violation, please report what you know by sending an email to Stacy Nordquist, UIW Compliance Coordinator, at nordquis@uiwtx.edu. Confidentiality of any information relayed to the Compliance Department will be maintained. You will remain anonymous.
